Calicut, February 9, 2024: The ecclesiastical community of Kerala, led by Cardinal Baselios Mar Cleemis, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, gathered at the Mother of God Cathedral in Calicut to celebrate a landmark event in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Calicut. The thanksgiving Holy Eucharist, held on this day, marked the silver jubilee of Episcopal ordination of Bishop Varghese Chakkalakal, an occasion that brought together clergy and laity alike to honor a journey of dedication, service, and pastoral care that has spanned over a quarter of a century.

A Tribute to Exemplary Leadership

In his address, Cardinal Cleemis, who also presides over the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC), lauded Bishop Chakkalakal’s Episcopal Ministry as an exemplary model of leadership characterized by unwavering dedication, profound compassion, and a transformative vision. The celebration was graced by the presence of several church dignitaries, including Mar Andrews Thazhath, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), Major Archbishop Emeritus Cardinal George Alencherry, and numerous archbishops from across Kerala. The event was a testament to the deep respect and admiration Bishop Chakkalakal commands among his peers and the faithful.

A Legacy of Multifaceted Service

Bishop Varghese Chakkalakal’s ministry is distinguished by his roles across various capacities within the Church’s hierarchy. As the Bishop of Calicut, he has been instrumental in guiding the diocese with a vision for growth and spiritual renewal. Further, his leadership as the President of the Kerala Regional Latin Catholic Council (KRLCBC) and his active participation in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CCBI) Commission for Vocations, Seminaries, and Religious, underline his commitment to nurturing vocations and religious life. Additionally, his roles as the Chairman of the KCBC Charismatic Commission and the Episcopal Commission for St Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore, reflect his dedication to spiritual formation and the development of future clergy.

Marking a Milestone of Faithful Service

The journey of Bishop Chakkalakal began with his appointment as the first Bishop of Kannur in 1998, followed by his Episcopal ordination on February 7, 1999, under the consecration by Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil, OCD. Over the years, his ministry has been marked by significant contributions, including his tenure as the Secretary General of the CCBI (2011-2017) and the KCBC (2004-2007), showcasing his leadership skills and pastoral heart.

A Model of Episcopal Ministry

As the church in Kerala and beyond celebrates Bishop Chakkalakal’s silver jubilee, it is a moment to reflect on the impact of his ministry that has touched countless lives through his compassionate service, visionary leadership, and unwavering faith. His Episcopal journey stands as a beacon of hope and an exemplary model for clergy and laity alike, inspiring all to live out their faith with zeal and dedication.
