Pathanamthitta Diocese Celebrates Crystal Jubilee with Grandeur

Date:

The Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy of Pathanamthitta, established on 25 January 2010, celebrated its Crystal Jubilee, marking 15 years of ecclesiastical service, on 25 January 2025 at St. Antony’s Malankara Syrian Catholic Church, Thatta. The event was a magnificent occasion that celebrated the rich spiritual legacy, dynamic community outreach, and unwavering commitment of the diocese.

Thanksgiving and Commemorations

The celebrations commenced with a Thanksgiving Holy Qurbono led by the diocese’s first bishop, His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Yoohanon Mor Chrysostom, whose tenure laid the strong foundation for the diocese’s growth. The Bishop of Mavelikara, His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Joshua Mor Ignathios, delivered a heartfelt Jubilee message, reflecting on the milestones achieved by the diocese and its role in the mission of the Universal Church.

Recognition of Excellence

The event also honoured individuals and organisations within the diocese who have demonstrated exemplary contributions to various ministries and community initiatives. His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Mor Irenios, the Bishop of Pathanamthitta, presided over the felicitation ceremony, acknowledging the efforts of clergy, religious, and lay faithful who have contributed to the growth and vibrancy of the diocese.

A Rich Legacy of Faith and Mission

The Eparchy of Pathanamthitta, part of the ecclesiastical province of Trivandrum, covers a territory of 2,100 square kilometres, including 100 parishes spread across five ecclesiastical districts: Pathanamthitta, Konni, Ranni-Perunadu, Pandalam, and Seethathode. With a Catholic population of around 40,000 faithful and 122 priests, the diocese continues to uphold its mission of evangelisation, education, and social welfare.

Pathanamthitta holds a special place in the Reunion Movement initiated by Venerable Mar Ivanios. It was in this region, at Mundanmala in Ranni-Perunadu, that Mar Ivanios decided to embrace full communion with the Catholic Church. This historic movement paved the way for many families and individuals to join the Catholic Church, enriching its mission in the region.

Educational and Charitable Contributions

The diocese is deeply committed to education and social welfare, operating four high schools, four upper primary schools, 13 lower primary schools, and several unaided institutions. It also runs a Minor Seminary, a Pastoral Centre, and homes for the elderly and mentally challenged. These initiatives reflect the diocese’s dedication to uplifting the underprivileged and nurturing future generations in faith and knowledge.

Historical Significance

The diocese is also home to one of the ancient Christian sites of India, Nilackal (Chayal), traditionally believed to have been established by St. Thomas the Apostle. This adds to the region’s historical and spiritual significance, making it a beacon of faith and unity.

Looking Ahead

As the diocese enters its 16th year, it continues to be a vibrant centre of faith, ecumenism, and service. The Crystal Jubilee celebrations were not just a commemoration of the past but a call to renew the commitment to the Church’s mission, inspired by the legacy of saints and pioneers like Mar Ivanios.

The Pathanamthitta Diocese Crystal Jubilee stands as a proof of the enduring grace of God and the unwavering dedication of its clergy, religious, and lay faithful. Let us pray that the diocese continues to flourish as an inspiration of faith, hope, and love.
