Muvattupuzha – In a moving gesture of gratitude and remembrance, the Muvattupuzha Ecclesiastical District and the local civic community joined together to honour the life and legacy of His Holiness Pope Francis, who captivated the world through his life, ministry, and witness.
The memorial service was held at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Vazhapally, on 24 April 2025 at 6:00 PM, bringing together clergy, religious, civic leaders, and faithful from across the region.
The gathering was presided over by His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Yoohanon Mor Theodosios, Bishop of the Eparchy of Muvattupuzha. Distinguished guests who addressed the gathering included:
- His Grace Dr. Kuriakose Mar Theophilos, Bishop of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church,
- His Grace Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius, Bishop of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church,
- Mr. Francis George, Member of Parliament,
- Mr. Manoj Moothedan, President of the Ernakulam District Panchayat,
- Mr. P.P. Eldhose, Chairman of Muvattupuzha Municipality,
- and Very Rev. Fr. Thomas Njarakkattu Cor Episcopa, along with numerous priests, religious, and civic dignitaries.
Among those who offered tributes and reflections were Fr. George Ayyaneth O.I.C., Fr. Varghese Madathikunnel, Fr. Varghese P, Mother Josna SIC, Fr. Kuriakose Kodakallil, Fr. Vincent Paramel, Fr. Roy Kannanchira C.M.I., and Mr. V.C. Georgekutty.
Following the memorial addresses, all participants solemnly offered floral tributes before a portrait of Pope Francis, paying their final respects. The ceremony continued with prayer services conducted according to the Syro-Malabar, Latin, and Syro-Malankara liturgical traditions, symbolising the unity and diversity of the Catholic Church.
A large number of priests, religious, office bearers of missionary organisations, cultural leaders, and laity participated, making the event a profound testimony to the deep affection and reverence Pope Francis inspired across communities and traditions.
