Mor Pachomios Graces the Installation of Mar Prince Antony Panengadan in Shamshabad

Date:

In a historic moment for the Catholic community of Shamshabad, the installation of Mar Prince Antony Panengadan as the new bishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Diocese was made even more significant by the presence of His Excellency Mathews Mor Pachomios, the Eparchial Bishop of the Eparchy of St Ephrem Khadki from the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. This rare and notable participation underscored the spirit of unity and ecumenical harmony between the two Eastern Catholic Churches.

The event, held on the evening of 10 November 2024 at Saint Mary’s Church in Balapur, was attended by hundreds of faithful, clergy, and dignitaries from across India and abroad. As Mar Prince Antony was formally installed as the new bishop, the presence of Mor Pachomios served as a powerful symbol of the shared heritage and mutual respect that binds the Catholic traditions together.

A Moment of Unity in the Church

Mathews Mor Pachomios’ participation at the installation ceremony marked a unique occasion in the relationship between the Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara Churches. His presence highlighted the growing bonds of collaboration and spiritual solidarity between the two Churches. Addressing the gathering, Mor Pachomios extended his heartfelt blessings to Mar Prince Antony and commended the Diocese of Shamshabad for its vibrant faith and dedication to service.

This historic moment of togetherness reinforced the collective mission of both Churches—to spread the Gospel and uphold the values of compassion and service in an ever-changing world.

The Installation Ceremony: A Celebration of Faith and Leadership

The installation ceremony began with a traditional procession, led by Mar Raphael Thattil, the newly elected Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church. The faithful gathered as Mar Prince Antony was presented with the pastoral staff, an enduring symbol of his role as a shepherd to the Shamshabad diocese’s vast and diverse flock.

Hymns sung by a multilingual choir, representing the rich diversity of the diocese, filled the church as the ceremony unfolded. The participation of clergy and laity from both Eastern Catholic traditions added to the solemnity and spiritual depth of the occasion.

A Journey of Faith: From Adilabad to Shamshabad

Born on 13 March 1976 in Arimpur, Kerala, Mar Prince Antony Panengadan has devoted his life to spiritual service and leadership. Ordained as a priest in 2007, he pursued advanced theological studies in Rome, earning a Doctorate in Biblical Theology. After serving in mission stations and parishes in the Eparchy of Adilabad, he was ordained as its bishop in 2015, becoming a beloved pastoral leader known for his fluency in multiple languages and his deep engagement with the faithful.

Now, as the bishop of Shamshabad, he assumes responsibility for India’s largest Catholic diocese by area, succeeding Mar Raphael Thattil, who has been elevated to Major Archbishop.

A Day of Togetherness and Celebration

Following the installation, Mar Prince Antony celebrated the Holy Mass, during which he addressed the faithful, speaking of humility, service, and unity. His Excellency Mor Pachomios joined other clergy in the liturgical celebrations, creating a profound moment of ecumenical prayer and fellowship.

Mar Raphael Thattil, who presided over the ceremony, reflected on the journey of Shamshabad as a diocese and expressed his confidence in Mar Prince Antony’s ability to lead the community with wisdom and compassion.
