(Rendered from the original Malayalam Preface to the Translation)

When news spread that Our Fathers’ Faith — a catechetical classic originally written by James Cardinal Gibbons, Archbishop of Baltimore, USA — was being translated into Malayalam by Rev. Fr. Thomas Inchayikudi, more than a thousand requests for copies were received even before the printing had begun. This alone stands as testament to both the popularity of the original work and the trust placed in the translator’s ability by the Malayalam-speaking faithful.

Readers familiar with English theological literature know Cardinal Gibbons well. Likewise, Malayalam-speaking Catholics recognise the pastoral contributions of Rev. Fr. Inchayikudi. No formal introduction is needed for either.

This book, a treasure of doctrinal clarity and spiritual wisdom, has served many generations across the world. Cardinal Gibbons’ work is rightly considered a classic of Catholic apologetics. Written during the latter half of the 19th century, the original English version has reportedly sold over two million copies globally. This Malayalam edition is based on its 85th official reprint.

The title Our Fathers’ Faith fittingly reflects the book’s content. It underscores that the faith professed by the Catholic Church today is the same faith held by the undivided Church of the early centuries — the faith of the Fathers before the Protestant Reformation. With elegance and reason, Cardinal Gibbons explains and defends the foundational doctrines of the Church.

Naturally, the original text bears the imprint of 19th-century American Protestant-Catholic dialogue. Since then, theological opinions have evolved; mutual respect between traditions has grown; and the ecclesial landscape has significantly changed. Taking these developments into account, Rev. Fr. Inchayikudi has approached this translation not with strict literalism, but with a pastoral and prudent mind. He has omitted certain outdated references and added explanatory notes where clarity demanded. This makes the work more meaningful and accessible for today’s readers.

When compared with earlier Malayalam attempts — notably that of Mr. C. Ambu years ago — this version by Rev. Fr. Inchayikudi stands out for its linguistic clarity, doctrinal precision, and literary grace. His simple yet eloquent style allows the depth of Cardinal Gibbons’ theology to shine through, even in translation.

At a time when Christians across the globe are yearning for unity, and when truth and charity must walk hand in hand, works such as this can serve as instruments of understanding, renewal, and communion. For Catholics seeking a reasoned understanding of their faith, and for those who question or misunderstand it, this book is a worthy companion. It speaks not only to the heart but to the mind — clarifying doctrine, correcting misconceptions, and encouraging confidence in the faith once handed down to the saints.

It is my sincere prayer that this Malayalam translation sees many reprints in the years to come and that Rev. Fr. Inchayikudi, who has already enriched our ecclesiastical literature through numerous valuable works, continues to do so.

I commend this book to all readers and humbly request that those who read it remember to pray for the ongoing renewal and unity of the Church.
