The Rite of Antioch, also known as the Liturgy of St. James, is traditionally regarded as the original rite of Jerusalem, celebrated by James, the brother of the Lord, in the Church at Jerusalem.

While it is now believed that the rite, in its current form, dates to the 4th or 5th century, its principal elements trace back to very early, possibly apostolic times, making it one of the most venerable rites in the Church.

• The original liturgy of Jerusalem was conducted in Aramaic, the language spoken by Our Lord and the Apostles.
• In Antioch, the rite was celebrated in Greek, as was customary in all major cities of the Roman Empire, including Rome.
• When the faith spread to rural areas, the liturgy was translated into Aramaic, or Syriac as it later came to be known, much like the Roman Rite was eventually translated into Latin.
