Bangalore: Cardinal Oswald Gracias was re-elected as president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) at its ongoing 30th Plenary Assembly in Bangalore. As an affirmation of his sterling leadership qualities, Cardinal Gracias, who is also the Archbishop of Bombay, was given a further two-year term, said CBCI spokesman Fr.Babu Joseph.
The Plenary Assembly elected Major Archbishop Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Church as the first Vice-President and Archbishop Mar George Valiamattom of Thalassery Archdiocese of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church as second Vice-President and Most Rev. Albert D’ Souza, Archbishop of Agra as Secretary General of the Catholic Bishops’ of Conference. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India consists of three sui juris (individual ritual Churches) Churches: Latin, Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara Catholic Churches, and therefore it deals with supra-ritual and national issues of the Catholic Church in India.
The Plenary Assembly of Catholic Bishops will come to its close on February 08, 2012 with a final statement on the theme: The Church’s Role for a Better India.
