A Call to Justice and Faith: Cardinal Cleemis Addresses Pala DCMS Jubilee Celebration

Date:

The vibrant atmosphere of Kunjachan Nagar in Ramapuram became the heart of a gathering that blended faith with an urgent call for social justice. Organised as part of the Platinum Jubilee of the Diocese of Pala and the 70th anniversary of the Dalit Catholic Mahajana Sabha (DCMS), this grand Christian conference brought together leaders, clergy, and the faithful. His Eminent Beatitude Cardinal Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos graced the event with a message that spoke deeply to the conscience of all present.

Illuminating the Spirit of Justice

The conference began with a solemn and symbolic gesture as Cardinal Cleemis lit the ceremonial lamp at the tomb of the Blessed Kunjachan, marking the commencement of this significant event. Addressing the gathering as the keynote speaker, His Eminence called for the safeguarding of the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution.

“Let no wounds be inflicted upon the sense of security that the Constitution provides for every citizen,” he proclaimed, expressing concern over religious persecution and systemic discrimination. Highlighting the plight of Dalit Christians, he insisted on a unified stance against inequality. “The Church in Kerala stands with Dalit Christians wholeheartedly,” he emphasised, urging for an inclusive term such as ‘Dalit Indian’ to underline solidarity.

Reflecting on the essence of national harmony, he added, “May our homeland remain a place where we live as one family, bound by a common humanity.”

Voices of Advocacy

The Archbishop of Changanacherry, His Grace Mar Thomas Tharayil, who formally inaugurated the event, echoed Cardinal Cleemis’ call for justice. Speaking on the need to eliminate discrimination in reservation policies, he noted, “This is a moment to reflect deeply. Faith must not become a reason for neglect, and the socio-political system must address the marginalisation of communities with humanity.”

Mar Tharayil also reminded the audience of the Church’s historic role in fostering education and societal values. “We must reflect on whether we have nurtured ourselves with the same commitment we have shown in nurturing society,” he said, highlighting the Church’s dual mission of service and self-renewal.

The Diocese’s Commitment

In his presidential address, the Bishop of Pala, His Excellency Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, underscored the Diocese’s unwavering dedication to Dalit Catholics. “The DCMS is at the heart of our Diocese,” he noted, adding, “One in every six members of the Diocese of Pala belongs to the Dalit Catholic community. Through initiatives addressing education, addiction, agricultural challenges, and other issues, we continue to stand as guardians of all our faithful.”

Bishop Kallarangatt also reflected on the Diocese’s active participation in movements for liberation and justice and its enduring efforts to uplift marginalised communities.

Adding a profound historical touch to the occasion was the presence of Bishop Emeritus Mar Joseph Pallikaparampil, who had received baptism and spiritual guidance from Blessed Kunjachan himself. His presence symbolised the enduring legacy of the blessed priest and the Diocese’s roots in compassionate service.

Symposium: A Voice for the Marginalised

The morning symposium focused on the theme “Kunjachan as a Guide for Dalit Liberation.” Chaired by Bishop Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, the session brought together an array of thinkers and leaders. His Grace Gheevarghese Mar Aprem, Chairman of the KCBC’s SC/ST/BC Commission, inaugurated the session with a passionate address emphasising the Church’s mission to stand firmly with Dalit Christians.

Bishop Mar Jacob Murickan delivered a heartfelt speech, while CBCI SC/BC Commission Secretary Vijayakumar Naik and theologians such as Fr. George Varghese Njarakkunnel and Dr. Sijo Jacob presented thought-provoking papers. The session, moderated by Vice Postulator of Kunjachan’s canonisation cause, Fr. Thomas Vettukattil, shed light on the relevance of Blessed Kunjachan’s life and mission in today’s world.

A Gathering of Leaders

The afternoon conference brought together leaders from across various spheres. His Grace Gheevarghese Mar Aprem delivered a special address, reiterating the Church’s commitment to equality. Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine shared his Jubilee message, while political leaders such as MPs Jose K. Mani and Anto Antony, and MLAs Mons Joseph and Sebastian Kulathunkal, contributed their perspectives.

Prominent leaders from the Diocese, including Monsignors Joseph Thadathil, Joseph Maleparambil, Sebastian Vethanath, and Joseph Kaniyodickal, joined lay leaders like DCMS State President James Elavunkal and Diocese President Binoy John in reaffirming their dedication to justice and unity.

An Act of Unity

As the day drew to a close, the voices and hearts of the faithful resonated with the spirit of Kunjachan’s legacy. The event not only honoured the past but ignited a shared sense of purpose for the future.

This gathering was more than a celebration—it was a profound reminder of the Church’s enduring mission to uplift the marginalised, protect the vulnerable, and remain a steadfast beacon of hope and justice in a complex world.
