Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos is elected as the President of CBCI

Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos is elected as the president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) today at its 31st plenary meeting held at Palai.

His Beatitude Baselios Cleemis Catholicos was appointed Cardinal of the Catholic Church by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI on 24 October 2012. His Beatitude, the youngest among the College of Cardinals, is a member of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches and the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue and was also elected the President of the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) in December 2013.

His Beatitude was nominated to the National Integration Council (NIC) by Dr Manmohan Singh at the beginning of this month.

The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church extends its hearty felicitations to the new President.

CBCI Plenary Assembly Started at Palai, Kerala

The 31st Plenary assembly of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) started at Alphonsa Pastoral Centre, Palai in Kerala. Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, Apostolic Nuncio, inaugurated the biennial meeting of CBCI. Mar Joseph Kallarangatt, Bishop of Palai welcomed the gathering and Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, Vice-President of CBCI, extended the vote of thanks.

Cardinals, Archbishops and Bishops from three Indian Catholic Rites – Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara and Latin – attend the 8-day meet. All the 184 bishops and office-bearers of various CBCI commissions joined a concelebrated mass as part of the opening of the meet.

Addressing the assembly of bishops from all parts of the country, the Apostolic Nuncio recalled that the welfare of the rejected and marginalised was an important mission as enjoined by the Second Vatican Council.

Cardinal Oswald Gracias, the President of CBCI, presided the opening session.

The meet is expected to discuss organisational, spiritual and social issues affecting the Church in India.

His Beatitude Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos is nominated to the National Integration Council (NIC)

Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, is nominated to the National Integration Council (NIC) by Dr Manmohan Singh, the Honorable Prime Minister of India.

The National Integration Council originated in a conference convened by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in September–October 1961. The NIC met for the first time in June 1962. The purpose of the Council is to find ways to counter problems that divide the country due to communalism, casteism, regionalism and fundamentalism. It reviews national issues and makes recommendations to foster the integrity of the nation. His Grace Benedict Mar Gregorios of venerable memory, the Metropolitan of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, was a member of the NIC

7th Feast of Commemoration of Major Archbishop Cyril Mar Baselios

The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church observed the 7th Feast of Commemoration of His Beatitude Cyril Mar Baselios, the First Major Archbishop-Catholicos, on 18 January 2014.
The Feast of commemoration started at 8 a.m. with the Holy Qurbono concelebrated by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos with Most Rev. Yoohanon Mar Chrysostom, Most Rev. Dr. Joshua Mar Ignathios, Most Rev. Thomas Mar Eusebius and Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios and many Rev. Priests at the Cathedral.  The memorial speech was delivered by Most Rev. Thomas Mar Eusebius.
It was followed by the Dhoopaprarthana. All participated in the Nercha served afterwards. Many Priests, Religious and faithful participated in the celebration.

Meeting of the Synodal Commission for Bible Apostolate

A meeting of the Synodal Commission for Bible Apostolate was held at the Catholicate Centre, Pattom, at 9 am on Wednesday, 15, January 2014. His Excellency Most Rev. Samuel Mar Irenios, Chairman of the Synodal Commission for Bible Apostolate presided over the meeting. His Excellency pointed out the significance and responsibility of Bible Apostolate in the day to day life of a faithful and our Church.

10 members present engaged in detailed discussions and chalked out certain proposals to the Holy Synod slated for March 2014. They include suggestions to form a Bible Society, to promote the Bible Week in each Eparchy, to conduct Bible Classes in the Eparchial level, and to make sure the active participation of students in the Logos Quiz promoted by Bible Commission of the KCBC .

The meeting came to an end at noon with the Secretary proposing a vote of thanks.

Meeting of the Synodal Commission for Communication Media

A meeting of the Synodal Commission for Communication Media was held at the Catholicate Centre, Pattom, at 2.30 pm on Wednesday, 15, January 2014. His Excellency Most Rev. Samuel Mar Irenios, Chairman of the Synodal Commission for Communication Media presided over the meeting. The meeting began with a short prayer by Rev. Fr Bovas Mathew, director of the Public Relations of the Major Archdiocese of Trivandrum. In His presidential address His Excellency Mar Irenios apprised the members of the gravity of the responsibilities entrusted with them and asked them to consider ways and means of using traditional and modern media for spreading the Word, manifesting the position of the Church on various issues and helping society in general.

The Secretary of the Commission Dr Abraham Joseph was asked by the Chair to outline a few broad areas for discussion and action. The areas included preparing a directory, conducting a camp, organizing surveys and studies, starting a media archives, developing a software division and formulating apt and timely responses.
The 16 members present engaged in detailed discussions, sharing their vast and varied experiences and insight to make the Commission focused and dynamic in carrying out its mandate.

The Commission decided to meet once more before Holy Synod slated for March 2014. The meeting came to an end with the Secretary proposing a vote of thanks.

New York MCYM Tri-State Regional Youth Night

The annual Youth Night for the New York Tri-state region was held on January 11, 2014 under the direction of the MCYM Tri-State Regional Board. The evening started at 5:30 pm with Evening prayer followed by Welcome Speech by Abraham Thomas (Regional President) and Director’s Address by Rev. Fr. Michael Edathil. Msgr. Richard Figliozzi, Pastor of St. Catherine of Sienna Parish and Administrator of St. Vincent De Paul Parish, Elmont gave the Keynote address. He reminded the audience about the need for prayer to know and accept the will of God in one’s life, especially during difficult situations. Various cultural programs of the highest quality were presented by the youth from New Jersey, New Rochelle, Rockland, and Elmont Cathedral parishes. The evening ended with Vote of Thanks by Bryant Geevarghese (Regional Secretary) followed by dinner. There were about 200 people present at Youth Night. Special word of appreciation to Rev. Fr. Michael Edathil, the Tri-State Regional Board, the priests, and the participants whose dedication and talents made the Youth Night a wonderful success!

Training Programme – Suvishesha Sangham

The training programme of the 2nd batch Suvishesha Sangham at the ecclesial level of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church was conducted at the Catholicate Centre, Pattom from 07 to 09 January 2014.

The programme started at 9.30 am with a prayer service by His Excellency Most Rev. Thomas Mar Anthonios, Curia Bishop, at the tomb of the Servant of God Archbishop Mar Ivanios. His Excellency also conducted the introductory session and welcomed the members.

His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis, Major Archbishop Catholicos addressed the members of the Suvishesha Sangham with inspiring messages.

His Excellency Most Rev. Jacob Mar Barnabas, the Chairman of the Suvishesha Sangham, Rev. Fr. Antony Kakkanatt, Executive Secretary, Rev. Sr Namitha SIC, Rev. Sr Mary Prasad DM and Rev. Sr Francina D M gave classes on various subjects.

Mr. Thomaskutty Panachickal, and Mrs Jiby Varghese, members of the 1st batch Suvishesha Sangham at ecclesial level shared their experience. His Excellency Most Rev. Vincent Mar Paulos celebrated the Holy Qurbono on the concluding day and gave message. Eucharistic adoration, confession, Holy Qurbono, etc., were part of the programme.

59 members from various Eparchies and ETRI participated in the training programme.

The Syro Malankara Catholic Church celebrated the Feast of the Major Archbishop Catholicos, Baselios Cardinal Cleemis

The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church celebrated the Feast of St. Basil the great, the patron Saint of the Major Archbishop-Catholicos, His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis.

The celebrations started with the Holy Qurbono. His Grace Most Rev. Thomas Mar Koorilos, His Excellencies Most Rev. Yoohanon Mar Chrysostom, Most Rev. Dr. Joshua Mar Ignathios, Most Rev. Abraham Mar Julios, Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thomas, Most Rev. Dr. Vincent Mar Paulos, Most Rev. Dr. Jacob Mar Barnabas, Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Anthonios, Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Mar Irenios and Rev. priests concelebrated the Holy Qurbono.

His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Jacob Mar Barnabas delivered the homily. It was followed by the Felicitation meeting. Shri. Jacob Punnoos IPS, the former DGP, felicitated His Beatitude, the Catholicos, on his feast day on behalf of the church. Many Priests, Religious and faithful participated in the celebration.

First Malayalam Website in the name of Pope Francis Inaugurated

The first Malayalam website in the name of His Holiness Pope Francis, www.marpapa.com, prepared under the leadership of Karunikan’ a publication of the Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (MCBS) and the department of Communication and Media of the Major Archieparchy of Trivandrum was inaugurated on 29 December 2013, by His Beatitude Major Archbishop Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos together with Honourable Sri Sashi Tharoor, Minister of State for Human Resource Development.
