Pope Appoints Archbishop Giambattista Diquattro as the New Apostolic Nuncio to India, Nepal

Holy Father Pope Francis appointed Archbishop Giambattista Diquattro as the new Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal on 21 January 2017. The Most Rev Giambattista Diquattro was born in Bologna (Italy) on March 18, 1954. He was ordained a priest in Ragusa on August 24, 1981. He received his Master’s Degree in civil law from the University of Catania, his Doctorate in Canon Law (JCD) from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, and his Master’s Degree in dogmatic theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He is fluent in Italian, French, Spanish and English.

Fr. Diquattro joined the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See on 1 May, 1985, serving continuous missions in the Pontifical Representations in the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Chad, the United Nations (in New York), and later in the Secretariat of State of His Holiness ? Section for Relations with States, and in the Apostolic Nunciature in Italy. On 2 April, 2005, Saint John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop of Giromonte and Apostolic Nuncio to Panama. His Episcopal Ordination took place on 4 June, 2005, in the cathedral of Ragusa, and he began his mission in Panama on 12 July, 2005. He was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Bolivia on 21 November, 2008.

Catholics in India Observe a Prayer-Day for Fr. Tom

Sri. Pratheep Mathew Nallila of Eparchy of Mavelikara and former president of the Malankara Catholic Youth Movement (MCYM) is elected the new President of the Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM). 10th National Youth Convention

His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the Major Achbishop of Syro-Malankara Catholic Church celebrated the Solemn Holy Qurbono during the 10th National Youth Convention conducted by Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) at Magalapuram.  His Excellency Most Rev. Vincent Mar Paulos, Bishop of Marthandom, and Msgr. George Kalayil, Syncellus of Puttur concelebrated. The bishops and other priests the participants also participated in the Holy Qurbono.

Inter-Church Council held

Inter Church Council had declared that one-sided amendment of the Kerala Educational Rules (KER) is not acceptable. The government should re-examine the decision that not to allot any new courses to the colleges in aided and self-financing sectors. The government should take into confidence the Christian Managements who have been contributing a lot in the field of education in Kerala: said the members of the inter-church council in Kerala after the meeting held in Kochi on 17 January 2017. The Council meeting was presided over by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the President of CBCI.

CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury visited His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church on 8 January 2017 at Major Archbishop’s House, Pattom, Trivandrum. His Beatitude welcomed the CPM leader with a bouquet and presented him a carved marble of Last Supper. The national leader recalled his memories during his visit to Holy Land to participate in a meeting of communist party in Israel. His beatitude asked the intervention of his party at national level for the safe release of Fr Tom Uzhunnalil, Salesian priest, who was kidnapped in Yemen. He promised the Major Archbishop his wholehearted support for the same.

International Film Festival on Mother Teresa

The Catholic Church in Goa is hosting a six-day Mother Teresa International Film Festival from 5 January 2016 onwards. The festival screened a number of Indian and International films based on the life and work of the Albanian-born saint. The Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media, Goa said that the aim of the festival is to make known the life and works of Mother Teresa so that all may be inspired by her life to serve the society.

The event is a part of a series of celebratory events being organized by the Catholic Church in honour of Mother Teresa. The films screened at the six day festival are “In the Name of God’s Poor” (USA), “All for God’s Love” (India), “Mother Teresa and Me” (UK), “The Fifth World” (Spain) and Nirmal Hriday (India).

Indian Thought Should be Known World Wide, Cardinal Cleemis

It is the need of the time that the Indian thought should be known world-wide, said His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the Major Archbishop of Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, while releasing the new book “The Sacred Feminine in Indian Thought” authored by Rev. Dr Aniyil Tharakan, the former Principal of St. John’s College, Anchal. His Beatitude gave the first copy to Sri. O. Rajagopal MLA during the function held at Cardinal Cleemis School of Management Studies Auditorium on 3 January 2017, Nalanchira, Trivandrum. The book which expressed Indian thought in English language is very useful. It will help the foreigners understand the importance of feminine in the Indian thought, His Beatitude added.

AMICOS Mar Gregorios Award for M A Yousef Ali

The 56th anniversary of Malankara Service Society (MSS) was celebrated at an event held at St Mary’s School, Pattom, on Monday, 2nd January 2017. Tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran inaugurated the convention presided over by major archbishop cardinal Baselios Cleemis Catholicos bava.

Malankara Social Service Society founded by archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios in 1961, had received special consultative status of United Nations Economic and Social Council and also has membership at United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI).

NRI industrialist and managing director of LuLu Group International, M A Yousuf Ali was honoured with the archbishop Mar Gregorios award instituted by the alumni association of Mar Ivanios College, Association of Mar Ivanios College Old Students (AMICOS), for his contribution to the industrial sector. The award which carries a plaque, citation and a cash price of Rs 50,001 was presented by major archbishop Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Catholicos bava, Kadakampally Surendran and principal Rev Jiji Thomas.

“You have not achieved anything, until you contribute something to the society. I have tried to share my success with the society by providing job opportunities for the people in my homeland,” said Yousuf Ali.

After returning the cash price to the college authorities, he promised to provide a financial support of Rs 1 crore for the construction of 100 houses as part of the Snehapoorvam Oru Veedu project of the Society and Rs 1 crore to Research Centre at Mar Ivanios College.
