Pathanamthitta Diocese Celebrates Crystal Jubilee with Grandeur

The Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy of Pathanamthitta, established on 25 January 2010, celebrated its Crystal Jubilee, marking 15 years of ecclesiastical service, on 25 January 2025 at St. Antony’s Malankara Syrian Catholic Church, Thatta. The event was a magnificent occasion that celebrated the rich spiritual legacy, dynamic community outreach, and unwavering commitment of the diocese.

Thanksgiving and Commemorations

The celebrations commenced with a Thanksgiving Holy Qurbono led by the diocese’s first bishop, His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Yoohanon Mor Chrysostom, whose tenure laid the strong foundation for the diocese’s growth. The Bishop of Mavelikara, His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Joshua Mor Ignathios, delivered a heartfelt Jubilee message, reflecting on the milestones achieved by the diocese and its role in the mission of the Universal Church.

Recognition of Excellence

The event also honoured individuals and organisations within the diocese who have demonstrated exemplary contributions to various ministries and community initiatives. His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Mor Irenios, the Bishop of Pathanamthitta, presided over the felicitation ceremony, acknowledging the efforts of clergy, religious, and lay faithful who have contributed to the growth and vibrancy of the diocese.

A Rich Legacy of Faith and Mission

The Eparchy of Pathanamthitta, part of the ecclesiastical province of Trivandrum, covers a territory of 2,100 square kilometres, including 100 parishes spread across five ecclesiastical districts: Pathanamthitta, Konni, Ranni-Perunadu, Pandalam, and Seethathode. With a Catholic population of around 40,000 faithful and 122 priests, the diocese continues to uphold its mission of evangelisation, education, and social welfare.

Pathanamthitta holds a special place in the Reunion Movement initiated by Venerable Mar Ivanios. It was in this region, at Mundanmala in Ranni-Perunadu, that Mar Ivanios decided to embrace full communion with the Catholic Church. This historic movement paved the way for many families and individuals to join the Catholic Church, enriching its mission in the region.

Educational and Charitable Contributions

The diocese is deeply committed to education and social welfare, operating four high schools, four upper primary schools, 13 lower primary schools, and several unaided institutions. It also runs a Minor Seminary, a Pastoral Centre, and homes for the elderly and mentally challenged. These initiatives reflect the diocese’s dedication to uplifting the underprivileged and nurturing future generations in faith and knowledge.

Historical Significance

The diocese is also home to one of the ancient Christian sites of India, Nilackal (Chayal), traditionally believed to have been established by St. Thomas the Apostle. This adds to the region’s historical and spiritual significance, making it a beacon of faith and unity.

Looking Ahead

As the diocese enters its 16th year, it continues to be a vibrant centre of faith, ecumenism, and service. The Crystal Jubilee celebrations were not just a commemoration of the past but a call to renew the commitment to the Church’s mission, inspired by the legacy of saints and pioneers like Mar Ivanios.

The Pathanamthitta Diocese Crystal Jubilee stands as a proof of the enduring grace of God and the unwavering dedication of its clergy, religious, and lay faithful. Let us pray that the diocese continues to flourish as an inspiration of faith, hope, and love.

Life Rooted in Faith

Born on 20 August 1934 in Thumpamon, Pathanamthitta, to Skaria and Kunjamma, Fr. Joshua grew up in a family deeply rooted in Christian faith. Baptised in the Jacobite tradition at Manjinikkara Church, his family later entered into communion with the Catholic Church through the re-union movement led by Venerable Mar Ivanios. Inspired by the life of his uncle, Fr. John Kuzhinappurath OIC, one of the pioneering members of the reunion movement, Fr. Joshua embraced the priesthood.

After completing his school education at Mar Gregorios High School, Thumpamon, and intermediate studies at Ajmer University, he joined the seminary in 1955 under the guidance of Benedict Mor Gregorios. Following his philosophical studies at St. Joseph’s Seminary, Mangalore, Fr. Joshua, along with Fr. Thomas Ezhiyath, became the first Syro-Malankara Catholic seminarians to study theology in Europe. He completed his theological training at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, where he was ordained a priest on 8 September 1964 by Benedict Mor Gregorios.

A Scholar and Educator

Fr. Joshua’s dedication to academic excellence earned him accolades as a professor of French at Mar Ivanios College, where he served from 1968 to 1990. His passion for education extended to his studies in French literature at Sorbonne University, Paris, and Pondicherry University, where he obtained advanced degrees. As a revered faculty member, he inspired countless students and contributed significantly to the college’s intellectual growth.

A Devoted Missionary and Parish Priest

Fr. Joshua’s missionary spirit found expression in his pastoral ministry across several parishes, including Vandanoor, where he played a pivotal role in rejuvenating St. Mary’s Malankara Syrian Catholic Church and establishing the St. Mary’s CBSE School, now a beacon of education in the region. A man of vision and compassion, he also constructed homes for impoverished families and supported the education of underprivileged children.

Service in Retirement

In 2010, Fr. Joshua retired to the Clergy Home in Kumbazha but remained active in spiritual guidance. As an Assistant Spiritual Father at the Gurukulam Minor Seminary, Bathery, he continued to inspire young seminarians.

Faith and Charity

Fr. Joshua’s profound love for the Blessed Virgin Mary was evident in the grotto he built at Thumpamon in 2009, marking his 45th anniversary of priesthood. In 2014, his Golden Jubilee of Priesthood was celebrated at Thumpamon Parish, where he established the JC Peace Foundation, a charitable trust dedicated to community welfare.

Daughters of Mary Sisters Celebrate Decades of Dedication

0

In a celebration that reflected both the depth of their faith and the impact of their mission, 40 Sisters from the Congregation of the Daughters of Mary (DM) marked their Golden and Silver Jubilees of religious consecration. The event, held at the DM Generalate in Kudappanakunnu, Trivandrum, became a profound testament to their unwavering commitment to Christ and service to humanity.

A Milestone Event Led by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos

The jubilee celebration was graced by the presence of His Eminent Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the Major Archbishop-Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, who offered the Holy Qurbono and delivered a moving homily. Reflecting on the lives of the jubilarians, His Beatitude said, “Your decades of consecrated service are a shining example of what it means to live the Gospel. Through your prayers, sacrifices, and tireless work, you have been true ambassadors of Christ’s love and hope.”

The Holy Qurbono was a spiritual highpoint, bringing together the Sisters, clergy, and laity in a spirit of thanksgiving for the countless blessings the Congregation has received over the years.

Remembering the Legacy of Service: The Daughters of Mary

The Congregation of the Daughters of Mary was founded on 8 May 1938 by Monsignor Joseph Kuzhinjalil, a visionary missionary of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, with the paternal blessings of the Servant of God, Mar Ivanios, the founder of the Church. Established at Marthandam, Tamil Nadu, during the early days of the re-union movement, the Congregation began its mission among the socially and economically marginalised communities. The DM Sisters, guided by their charism to be “pure and poor” and to proclaim the Word of God, embraced the Franciscan spirituality, dedicating their lives to prayer, evangelisation, and service.

A Legacy of Dedication

Over the decades, the Daughters of Mary have established a remarkable legacy of service, focusing on education, health care, social welfare, and faith formation. From running schools and technical institutes to providing care through orphanages, old age homes, and palliative care centres, the Sisters have been tireless in their mission to uplift the underprivileged and spread the message of Christ. Their home-visiting ministry has brought Christ’s presence to countless homes, breaking barriers of caste, creed, and socio-economic status.

Today, the Congregation spans six provinces, with over 900 professed members serving in 56 dioceses across India and abroad, including mission stations in Germany, the United States, and Africa. The Jubilee celebration became an opportunity to honour this legacy while recommitting to their mission.

Honouring the Jubilarians

The Golden and Silver Jubilarians were at the heart of the celebration. Representing 50 and 25 years of consecrated life, these Sisters stood as witnesses to God’s faithfulness and the transformative power of a life dedicated to Him. Superior General Sr. Dr. Lydia DM, along with the Provincial Superiors, led the congregation in honouring the jubilarians. In her address, Sr. Lydia remarked, “Your lives have been a reflection of God’s love. Through your silent sacrifices and relentless service, you have sown seeds of hope and faith in countless hearts.”

Unity and Gratitude

The celebration also brought together representatives from all six provinces of the Congregation, showcasing the unity and familial bond that define the Daughters of Mary. Following the Holy Qurbono, the Sisters, led by Sr. Lydia, extended their heartfelt greetings to His Beatitude Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos on the occasion of his feast day. This gesture of respect and gratitude highlighted the close relationship between the Congregation and the leadership of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church.

A Rich History of Evangelisation

The Daughters of Mary have been instrumental in spreading the faith, particularly in South India, where their founder, Monsignor Joseph Kuzhinjalil, began his mission. Inspired by the vision of Mar Ivanios, Monsignor Kuzhinjalil dedicated his life to serving the spiritually and materially poor, establishing the Congregation to extend this mission. The Congregation’s work has been pivotal in the growth of the Church, contributing to the establishment of dioceses such as Marthandam and Parassala.

Looking to the Future

As the jubilarians and their congregation reflected on their journey, the celebration became a moment of spiritual renewal. His Beatitude, in his concluding words, encouraged the Sisters to remain steadfast in their mission, saying, “Your lives are a testament to the power of faith and dedication. As you continue your work, may you inspire future generations to follow in your footsteps and bring the light of Christ to the world.”

The jubilee celebration was more than an event; it was a profound expression of gratitude, unity, and hope. As the Daughters of Mary move forward, they carry with them a rich legacy and an unwavering commitment to their mission: to proclaim the Word of God and to serve those in need with love and humility.
