The Reading of the Scriptures

The reading of the Scriptures, following the ancient Jewish custom, is found in all liturgies at this point. This solemn proclamation of the Word of God, the “good news” of salvation, serves as a catechesis—an instruction in the mystery of faith for all the people.

In the Syrian Church, there are always three readings:

  1. One from the Acts or the Catholic Epistles.
  2. One from St. Paul.
  3. One from the Gospel.

Each reading is preceded by a chant, in which all the people join, recalling the divine character of the apostolic preaching. The readings are conducted facing the people, in the vernacular language, so they can be understood by all.

The reading from the Gospel is performed with great solemnity, as in all liturgies. The priest stands in the center of the sanctuary, while servers carry lights and incense, emphasizing the sacredness of the moment.
