The Holy Qurbono

In accordance with tradition, a Syrian church is always built with its sanctuary facing the East, symbolizing the place of the rising sun, which represents both the Risen Christ and the location of His expected Second Coming from heaven. The church is divided into three sections, separated by steps:

  1. The Nave (Haiklo = Temple): This is where the people stand during the liturgy.
  2. The Choir (Qestrumo): Positioned between the nave and the sanctuary.
  3. The Sanctuary (Madhb'ho): Also referred to as the “Holy of Holies,” it is divided from the rest of the church by a veil. This veil, reminiscent of the one in the Temple of Jerusalem, is drawn at specific moments during the liturgy.

The Syrian Church's tradition deeply emphasizes the sanctity of the sanctuary. It is revered as the place where God Himself becomes present in the holy Mysteries, echoing the vision of the prophet Isaiah in the Temple of Jerusalem. It is also believed to be a sacred space where angels join in worship with their cry of “Holy, Holy, Holy.”
