During the Creed, the priest performs the washing of hands as a ritual act of preparation for the Holy Sacrifice. As St. Cyril of Jerusalem explains:
“Hands are a symbol of action, and washing them is a sign that we ought to be pure and free from all sinful and unlawful deeds.”
Following this act of purification, the priest turns to the congregation, spreading his hands in a gesture of supplication, asking for their prayers. He then prays silently before the altar, humbly preparing himself for the sacred rites ahead.
