The Eleventh Plenary Assembly of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conference

The Catholic bishops from across Asia gathered for the eleventh Plenary Assembly of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conference from 28th November to 4th December 2016 at Negombo, Colombo.

It was the first time that Sri Lanka was hosting the assembly, which was initially held in 1972. The conference’s plenary assemblies are held every four years.

The theme of the Plenary was “The Asian Catholic Family: The local Church of the poor in the mission of mercy.” Participants discussed the “Joy of the gospel and the family in Asia in the light of the synod.”

The meet started with a Solemn Mass celebrated by the papal envoy, Cardinal Telesphore Placidus Toppo, Archbishop of Ranchi, on 29 November 2016.

His Beatitude Cardinal Mar George Allanchery, (the Major Archbishop of Syro –Malabar Catholic Church), His Excellency Most Rev. Mar Andrews Thazath (Archbishop of Trichur), His Excellency Most Rev. Mar Mathew Arackal (Bishop of Kanjirapally), His Excellency Most Rev. Mar Joseph Kallarangatt (Bishop of the Eparchy of Palai), His Excellency Most Rev. Mar Prince Panengadan (Bishop of Adilabad), His Excellency Most Rev. Dr Varghese Chakkalakal (Bishop of Calicut), His Excellency Most Rev. Dr Thomas Mar Anthonios OIC (Exarch of Exarchate of St Ephrem of Khadki-Pune), priests and representatives of the Eastern Churches participated in the meet.

The Sri Lankan government donated 10 million rupees (US$66,667) to help cover the cost of running the assembly.

St. Antony’s Malankara Catholic Church Vellarada, was Blessed

The newly constructed St. Antony’s Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, Muttachal, Vellarada, was blessed by His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, on 14th November 2016.

His Excellency Most Rev. Samuel Mar Irenios, the Auxiliary Bishop of Trivandrum concelebrated the blessing.
Rev. Fr Mathews Alumoottil, the parish priest with the parish council arranged the blessing ceremony which was followed by a solemn Holy Qurbono.

Many priests, religious and faithful were present during the function.

“The Church continues the evangelical works of Jesus”: Sri. Pinarayi Vijayan

“Through the works of mercy the Church continues the evangelical works of Jesus” said Sri. Pinarayi Vijayan, the Honourable Chief Minister of Kerala while inaugurating the concluding ceremony of the year-long celebrations of the Extra Ordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy declared by Pope Francis. The programme was organized by the Commission of Justice, Peace and Development and the Commission for Family under the auspicious leadership of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Conference at Chaithanya Pastoral Centre, Thellakom, on Saturday 12 November 2016.

The Chief Minister also applauded the various charitable works done by the Catholic Church in Kerala. “The contributions of the Church in the development of basic infrastructure, healthcare services and educational ministry and in particular the housing projects are exemplary”, he added.

His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the President of KCBC presided over the function and said: “Through the works of mercy, the Church can transmit to thousands the divine presence and goodness at all time.” His Beatitude also declared that “the ministry of mercy never ends.” During the function, the Church honoured many people who did exemplary works of mercy during the past years in the Name of God and the Church. His Grace Soosai Pakiam (Archbishop of Latin Archdiocese of Trivandrum and His Grace Mathew Moolakkatt (Archbishop of Kottayam) gave benedictory speeches, His Grace Most Rev. Dr Thomas Mar Koorilos (Archbishop of Tiruvalla) gave the introductory talk.

Mar Joseph Perunthottam (Archbishop of Changanacherry), His Excellency Mar George Madathikandathil (Bishop of Kothamangalam), His Excellency Dr Joseph Kariyil (Bishop of Kochi), His Excellency Dr. Silvester Ponnumuthan (Bishop of Punalur), His Excellency Mar Sebastian Adayanthrath (Auxiliary Bishop of Ernakulam- Angamaly), His Excellency Mar Jose Pulickan (Auxiliary Bishop of Kanjirapally), Smt Daya Bhai (Human Right activist and Social Worker), Dr Mary Regina (Vice President- Catholic Council of India), Mr Shaji George (President- Kerala Catholic Federation),Rev. Fr George Vettikkattil (Deputy Secretary, KCBC), Rev. Fr Varghese Vallikatt, Rev. Fr Roy Vadakkel, and Rev. Fr Michael Vettikkatt were present on the occasion.

Thousands of faithful along with priests and religious participated in the solemn concluding ceremony.

His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Stephanos in UAE for the 10th Pradhinidhi Sammelanam

H.E. Most Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Stephanos celebrated Holy Qurbono at the St. Mary’s Church, Dubai on the 11th of Nov at 07:30pm. The Bishop was given a grand welcome from the gates of the Church where the children of the community lined up at the aisle of the Church holding Papel flags and thalapoli. The Holy Qurbono was concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Mathew Kandathil and Rev. Fr. Alex Vachaparampil. Seven little children and two senior members who joined the Syro Malankara Church recieved their 1st Holy Communion.

During his visit to the U.A.E, H.E. Most Rev. Dr. Philipose Mar Stephanos visited various Emirates within the Country. Earlier in the day, on the 11th of Nov His Holyness Celebrated Holy Qurbono at the St. Micheal’s Catholic Church, Sharjah. Before the Holy Qurbono, Bishop was given a grand welcome at the gate of the Church. Two children of the conmmunity also recieved thier 1st Holy Communion. Earlier in the day, Bishop met the students of the Sharjah MCCL at the Catechism session.

Rev. Sr Mariyatta SIC called to Eternal Rest

Rev. Sr Mariyatta SIC (82), a member of the Sisters of the Imitation of Christ, Tiruvalla Province, was called to eternal reward on 10th November 2016.

The funeral service will be held at Bethany Madhom Cemetery, Thirumoolapuram, on 11th November 2016 at 3.00 p.m. His Excellency Most Rev. Dr Thomas Mar Koorilos will officiate the funeral service.

She served as the Assistant Administrator of Pushpagiri Hospital, Tiruvalla and the Provincial Procurator in various places such as Puthenangadi, Mannar and Kumily.

May her soul rest in peace.

“A” grade Accreditation for Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology

The National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous institution, established by UGC, for evaluating the excellence of higher educational institutions, granted the title of Accreditation with “A” grade to Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology, Nalanchira.

The announcement was made in the council meeting held on 5th November, 2016.

The experts evaluated the teaching, study, discipline, research, administration, study facilities, schemes for the up-liftment of students, placement, arts and sports activities, eco-friendly programmes, social service activities, and modern techniques, etc. and granted the grade to mark MBCET as the ideal educational institute.

Foundation Stone Laid for a New Building at San Jose Minor Seminary, Puttur

The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of the New Building for San Jose Minor Seminary at Shanthigiri, Puttur was held on 1st November 2016 at 9.00 a.m.

H.E. Most Rev. Geevargehse Mar Divannasios, Bishop of Puttur, laid the foundation stone.

Vicar General Very Rev. Msgr. George Kalayil, Chancellor Very Rev. Fr. Philip Nellivila, Minor Seminary Rector Very Rev. Fr. Lukose Thaniyil, Proto-presbyter Very Rev. Fr. Peter John OIC, Rev. Fathers, Rev. Sisters, Seminarias, Diocesian Pastoral Council Secretary Mr. Sajith K.J., Parishioners, special Invitees, Engineer Mr. Vijoy and Contractor and the Supervisors of J.K. Constructions were present for the ceremony.

Koinonia 2016 Bible Kalolsav at the Diocese of Puttur

KOINONIA 2016, Bible Kalolsav for the Bhavana Jyotis (Family Apostolate), began on Saturday 29th October at Noojibalthila with the inaugural meeting, featuring more than 450 participants from various parishes of the Diocese.

Vicar General Very Rev. Msgr. George Kalayil officially inaugurated the Kalolsav by lighting the lamp.

The competitions were organized in four stages.

The closing ceremony was inaugurated by H.E. Most Rev. Geevargehse Mar Divannasios, Bishop of Puttur. Speaking at the function, His Excellency congratulated both the participants and the organizing team. He also gave away the prizes to the winners.

Karmai Unit bagged the overall trophy by emerging winners at KOINONIA 2016. Nellyadi Unit won the runners up trophy and the Kodimbala Unit gained the third position.

Nirappel Religious Harmony Award for Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos

The Nirappel Communal Harmony award was presented by Most Rev. Dr.Philipose Mar Chrysostom Marthoma Methrapolitha to Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholica Bava on 24/10/2016.

The event was inagurated by Prof. P.J Kurian (Deputy Chairman Of Rajya Sabha).

The event was also blessed by the presence of Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Oommen (CSI Deputy Moderator), Divya Shree Swami Abhayananda Tirtha Padhar (Sree Vidyadhi Raja Seva Ashram) and P.K Mohammed Moulavi Al Kausari (Imam Peruvanthanam Juma Masjid).

“The rosary gives faith and hope to many”: Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos

“The power of Rosary gives vitality, enlightenment and faith to many souls.” said His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, while giving the concluding message of the Rosary procession held under the Catholic Churches in Trivandrum on 16th October 2016.

“Rosary is the mystery which God has given for our salvation. When we pray together with the Mother of God, it gives spiritual powers to our families.” His beatitude reminded the thousands who marched with rosaries and candles at hand.

The Procession started at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Palayam and proceeded to St. Mary’s Queen of Peace Basilica, Palayam and reached Lourdes Forane Church, PMG.

His Grace Archbishop Soosai Pakiyam gave the introductory message. He Said: “We should get over our struggles through prayer and shold uphold the faith which gives hope to life”.

Very Rev. Msgr Dr Mani Puthiyidom, Very Rev. Fr George J. Gomez, Very Rev. Fr Jose Charuvil, Rev. Fr George Manthuruthil and Rev. Fr Roji Mukalel, representing the three catholic churches in Trivandrum gave leadership to the Rosary Procession.
